Is it a software problem or a hardware problem?

Before the patch for Shogun 2 my computer ran it fine but when I downloaded the patch just before the sega intro it crashes into desktop but I see the Shogun 2 cursor and hear the sega intro- I have reinstalled it twice, checked for missing files but still the same crash
